3 TYPES OF EAR INFECTIONS IN DOGS
Otitis can be caused by a variety of organisms, including bacteria, yeast and even mites.
Yeast infection in dog’s ears: Malassezia organisms are single-celled fungi that normally live in small amounts on a dog's skin. However, they can multiply. This form of infection is very common in dogs.
Bacteria: They can also populate your dog's ears if its immune system is compromised.
Mites: Ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) are parasites, so your pet catches them by direct contact via another infected animal, for example.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF MY DOG'S EAR INFECTIONS?
Several factors can predispose your dog to developing ear infections, such as genetics, lifestyle and sensitivity to allergens.
Some dog breeds, e.g. those with droopy ears, are at higher risk of developing ear infections, as these ears trap moisture.
A dog who lives in a very rainy environment, or who loves to bathe, will also develop more ear infections, for the same reason as mentioned above.
Humidity is the number one enemy of a dog’s ears!
A dog with allergies (environmental or food) is also prone to getting more ear infections, as the immune system is busy fighting allergens.
HOW DO I CLEAN MY DOG'S EARS?
Fill the ear canal with an ear cleaner.
Give the ear a good massage to dislodge the debris and then let your dog shake his head.
You can then use a cotton ball to wipe debris out of the ear canal.
Ear cleaning products sold in vet clinics are generally made from a solution containing a type of soft alcohol, which allows the ear to dry out after swimming, for example.
It’s important to never use cotton swabs/tips, as they push debris towards the back of the ear, which can cause blockages.
Also, be careful not to wash them too often and hold off if you suspect an infection.
HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR DOG HAS AN EAR INFECTION?
Typical symptoms of an ear infection in dogs are scratching of the ears and shaking of the head. Do you think your dog may have an ear infection?
To be able to spot an infection in your dog's ears, you will need to pay attention to the following signs:
Constantly shaking its head
Scratching the ear
Head tilted to the side
Significant amount of secretions in the ears
IS A DOG EAR INFECTION AN EMERGENCY?
If your dog's head is tilted or it seems to be hearing less than usual, it is possible that the infection may have migrated into the middle or inner ear and the tympanic membrane may have ruptured. This is therefore a more urgent condition.
A swollen, red, warm ear is also more worrying, as it could be an ear hematoma.
Such symptoms should be discussed with a vet.
HOW TO NATURALLY TREAT MY DOG'S EAR INFECTION AT HOME?
For cases of minor ear infections, we suggest natural remedies that you can treat your dog with at home, without even visiting a vet. We suggest our homeopathic solution, a cleaning technique based on peroxide or apple cider vinegar, and finally a treatment based on coconut oil.
